This month I’m continuing my series on some of the valuable lessons I learned about life and business while staying at a non-speaking convent in Northern Alabama over the holidays. You can click on the links to read Part 1, Part 3 and Part 4.
While at the monastery, I learned about the importance, and value, of silence.
Lesson #4: Silence is Golden
Our world today is filled with noise: chirps and rings from our phone, chatter from the television and radio, voices and music from online advertisements, and endless conversations with our family, friends, staff, and customers.
Especially when we don’t take time out to enjoy silence.
The phrase “Ora et Labora,” or “Pray and work,” is the whole mission of the monastery. The entire premise for my going to the retreat center (versus a spa) was to give attention to the mental, spiritual, and physical parts of me.
We give attention to maybe one of these elements, but not all three. In my own journey I’ve found that this balance is challenging to say the least. The idea of having a practice of silence and perhaps including prayer along with other habits such as listening helps us become more grounded, productive and at peace in the midst of busy and demanding lives.
Set aside time each day, even if it’s only five minutes, to sit or pray in silence. This daily meditation can be a powerful reminder of why you’re doing what you’re doing. And, it can give you the mental break you need to get through a busy, noisy day.
Stay tuned for Part 3 of these posts.
