Everyone, no matter who you are… or how many times you’ve pitched or presented… gets nervous.
But nerves can be managed and transferred into the type of energy that can propel you vs. hold you back.
These tips are what I actually do and use for myself AND others. So they aren’t kooky ideas but real hacks. See my top 5 ways on how to manage nerves (and nervousness) in preparation for your upcoming pitch. Combine any of these strategies to show up cool and confident!
- Breathe Deep
Incorporate slow, deep breathing from the diaphragm. With each inhale, allow the abdomen and rib cage to expand as the lungs fill with air. Exhale, allowing— but not forcing— the air to completely leave the lungs. A good first step is to practice this breathing technique for 10 minutes.
- Count Backward
Try slowly counting to 10 and then back again. It’s harder to freak about speaking when you’re busy remembering what number comes before seven.
- Sip Green Tea
Green tea is a source of L-Theanine, a chemical that has a relaxing effect without drowsiness. Boil water and drop in a tea bag(loose leaves if you’re a connoisseur). It’s recommended you stop drinking at least 90 minutes before a pitch or presentation.
- Cold Water…On Your Wrists
Pass on the perfume (or cologne) and go with water. When stress hits, drop some cold water on your wrists and behind your earlobes. There are major arteries right underneath the skin, so cooling these areas can help calm the whole body.
- Use Creative Visualization
These little daydreams, also known as “creative visualization,” involve thinking of something that makes us feel happy for an instant mood boost Imagine yourself during a better happier time OR post-pitch, after a roaring applause and sitting down to calmly listen to others.
